Research
My research explores how audiences engage with, and interact with, media in languages other than English. I’m particularly interested in indigenous languages of the UK such as Welsh, British Sign Language and Manx.
What makes someone choose Radio Nan Gàidheal over Radio Scotland? What kind of new content might attract viewers to a Jerriais language YouTube channel? Which would learners of Cornish be more likely to interact with – a weekly newspaper column or an online blog?
I’m planning to collaborate with broadcasters and/or publishers to test theories out and improve services for real. At this stage I’m looking for people who might be interested in working with me on this. If you provide media in a minority language and would like to know more about engaging your audience, then get in touch.
